Arriving by plane
Guarulhos Airport (Cumbica)
Car
If you arrive at Guarulhos International Airport, the easiest way to get to your accommodation is by taking a ride-share app or a taxi. Since this airport is quite far from downtown São Paulo and the USP area, the trip can be quite expensive.
Bus
There are bus services departing from Guarulhos International Airport that go to Avenida Paulista and other central areas of São Paulo. These buses are known as Airport Bus Service. They offer air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and luggage space. The boarding points are at Terminals 2 and 3 of Guarulhos Airport, and the fare is around R$ 43.90 (check the official website for current prices).
Subway
Another option is to take a ride-share app to the nearest subway station (Tucuruvi, Line 1 - Blue). There is also the CPTM Airport Express train (Line 13 - Jade) near the airport, but the trains run less frequently, departing every hour between 5:00 AM and midnight. You can take the free GRU Airport shuttle bus outside the airport terminals and get off at the Aeroporto-Guarulhos station (CPTM Line 13 - Jade). From Aeroporto-Guarulhos station, take the Expresso Aeroporto train, which connects to subway lines 1 - Blue (at Luz station) and 3 - Red (at Palmeiras-Barra Funda station). Fare: R$ 5.00 (ticket only; credit/debit cards are not accepted). More information can be found here.
Congonhas Airport
If you arrive at Congonhas, you will be approximately 40 minutes from USP by car. Although it is within the city of São Paulo, Congonhas does not have a nearby subway station, so the easiest way to reach your accommodation is by car. The nearest subway station is São Judas (Line 1 - Blue). You can take a ride-share app or taxi to get there. Bus line 675I (Terminal João Dias/ Metrô São Judas) passes by the airport and can take you to the station.
Arriving by bus
São Paulo has three bus terminals: Barra Funda, Jabaquara, and Tietê. Most buses arrive at Tietê, which is directly connected to subway line 1 - Blue via Portuguesa-Tietê station. The other two terminals are also connected to subway lines. Depending on the day and time of your arrival, you may hit rush hour with crowded subway trains and buses (Monday to Friday, from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM), which can make things a bit difficult, especially if you have luggage. Therefore, we advise taking a ride-share app or taxi from the airports/bus terminals to your accommodation. If you’re traveling with others, sharing a ride-share app/taxi is a good option.
Arriving by car
Several highways lead to São Paulo. Regardless of the time, be prepared to get some traffic when entering the city. Important: the vehicle rotation system is in effect from Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM and from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Here, you can check which day your car's license plate is restricted and which areas of the city are affected.
Arriving at USP
The nearest subway station to USP is the Butantã station on Line 4 - Yellow. Upon arriving at Butantã station, head towards the exit and, after passing through the turnstiles, take the second exit on the left. This exit will lead directly to the bus terminal, which is connected to the station. The path is quick and easy, taking only a few minutes, and there are signs throughout the station indicating the way to the terminal. Once at the terminal, you can take lines 8082-10 (Cid. Universitária - Metrô Butantã) or 8083-10 (Cid. Universitária - Metrô Butantã). Both go to the Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia (FMVZ), the location of the event. Here you can find more information about the USP bus lines and routes.
Getting around inside the University City
USP Guide App
To get around the campus, we recommend the USP Guide app (available on: Play Store, App Store), which shows the location of different departments, gates, banks, restaurants, bus stops, and the locations of the bus lines inside the University City. The app displays the route of these buses, as well as their real-time location.
Pedestrian Gates
Keep in mind that, depending on where you plan to stay, it might be useful to use one of the pedestrian gates around the campus. There are 7 gates that can be viewed through the USP Guide app, but the two most commonly used are Vila Indiana Gate (access via Av. Prof. Lineu Prestes) and Mercadinho Gate (access via R. Francisco dos Santos). The event venue is located near USP Gate 3 (Av. Corifeu de Azevedo Marques).

Driving is certainly more comfortable if you’re close to your destination or don’t mind possibly encountering traffic (São Paulo can be quite unpredictable in this regard). If you have your own car or a rental car, don’t forget about the vehicle rotation system – Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM and from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Student accommodation assistance
Undergraduate and postgraduate students who are interested in requesting help with their accommodation should send an email directly to Maryanna Simão, responsible for the accommodation committee, via email: mcsimao@usp.br. The committee will contact each interested party directly. Our goal is to help students find more affordable housing and accommodation options (ranging from 60 - 100 reais per day). Therefore, the sooner interested parties contact us, the greater the chances of us being able to assist with their requests.
University restaurants (bandejão)
Participants have the option to have lunch at the University restaurants, with a fee of R$10.00 for external students or R$15.00 for other participants (per meal).
